(English version at the end)

---------------------------------------------------------------

After 40 years within the European project, the United Kingdom (UK) has decided, for better or for worse, to leave the block. In this time many of us have enjoyed freedom of movement and we have created lives in both countries. The Spanish in the UK and the British in Spain.

Many, like me, have created European families with parents of different nationalities, and others have fell in love with the land and the people, and have found their home in Spain having lived here at least the required 10 years.

Now we are in an unprecedented situation. Spaniards who have lived in the UK and have naturalised as British, have the right to keep the two nationalities in parallel. But the British who want to acquire Spanish nationality must renounce their British nationality because of archaic traditions that do not reflect our identity as Europeans.

In our case, myself, Spanish by birth, and my children can keep both passports, so if in the future we have to return to the UK temporarily or permanently, we will not have limitations. But my husband, their father, who is British by birth, will have to pledge to give up his British passport to ensure his position within our family in Spain. What will happen to us if my mother-in-law becomes unwell and we have to return for an extended period to care for her? What will happen to his entitlement to his pension for example if the rules change? What if we find we must emigrate again to somewhere like Canada? The children and I will have an advantage with our British passports, an advantage that he would have lost.

This situation does not make any sense, especially considering that hundreds of thousands of Spanish nationals have had to emigrate to the UK to find opportunities in the last 20 years due to high unemployment. Many have or will soon return with their Anglo-Iberian families due to Brexit and the deterioration of the political and social situation.

Additionally, people who have planted roots in Spain, who have lived here for many years and who were excluded from the referendum for it, are in the difficult situation of losing the ability to return temporarily or permanently if the circumstances demand it, at the same time they risk losing rights to pensions, aid, support and their cultural identity.

This is an exceptional situation, which nobody saw coming, and for which many will suffer due to the political rigidity of both states.

Spain is an integral member of Europe, and as such we should accept the diversity of the families that form it, something that has already been done in countries like Germany. Let's teach the world that integration and coexistence are the future. Let's change this archaic rule that fails to recognise our status as members of a block of 28 countries. I would love to see this rule dropped for all EU nationals, but starting with the UK would be a first good step.

No! to renouncing British citizenship.

No! to the separation of families.

No! to the loss of rights and opportunities.

No! to the limitations of our identities as Europeans.
